STATESVILLE, NC (May 2014) – The Statesville and Barium Springs Family YMCAs, branches
of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina, announced today that Iredell
Health System has renewed its contribution to the LIVE
® at the YMCA program, a physical activity and well-being initiative for
This is the third year that Iredell Health System has provided funding
to support the program, which launched two years ago and has served 60
cancer survivors and their families. LIVE
® at the YMCA is designed to focus on the whole person. Cancer survivors
work with trained Y staff to build muscle mass and strength, increase
flexibility and endurance and improve functional ability. In addition
to physical benefits, the program is also focused on the emotional well-being
of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community environment
where people affected by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond.
"Iredell Health System has been a true partner in our LIVE
® at the YMCA program and we are so grateful to have their support again
this year," said Angela "Blake" Blakley, VP of Operations
YMCA of Northwest North Carolina and Executive Director Statesville Family
YMCA. "At the Y, we work to give all people the opportunity to meet
their health and wellness goals. We continue to see the LIVE
® at the YMCA impact lives and offer those who have been diagnosed with
cancer the support they need to build both emotional and physical strength."
® at the YMCA is designed to improve the health and day-to-day quality of
life for the country's growing population of cancer survivors and
their families by bringing customized, research-based health and well-being
programs into communities across the country.
"Our community and many of our patients have a need for a post-treatment
well-being program for cancer survivors," said Ed Rush, CEO of Iredell
Health System. "The Statesville Family YMCA fills that need in our
community by helping survivors become stronger in spirit, mind and body
as they reach their new 'normal'."
® at the YMCA is no cost to participants and also includes a free Metro
Membership to the Y for three months. One session has taken place already
this year and the next session begins August 25, 2014 and the Y is taking
applications now. Spots are limited and participants are selected by medical referral.
