Pulmonary rehabilitation

The pulmonary rehab program consists of individualized exercise training, nutritional counseling, and education on lung disease. Patients learn how to manage their conditions, techniques to help conserve their energy, breathing strategies and tobacco cessation. We also have psychological counseling and group support. A physician's referral is required.

The multidisciplinary program will be tailored to individual patients with a chronic respiratory impairment such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, sarcoidosis, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary fibrosis, interstitial lung disease and lung cancer, and who have had lung cancer surgery.

Participant diagnosis:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Emphysema.
  • Chronic bronchitis.
  • Bronchiectasis.
  • Sarcoidosis.
  • Pulmonary hypertension.
  • Pulmonary fibrosis.
  • Interstitial lung disease.
  • Lung cancer and lung cancer surgery.
  • Lung volume reduction surgery before and after lung transplant.


Pulmonary rehab patients will benefit by having fewer disease symptoms. This will enable them to function better in daily life, increase their ability to exercise, which also helps patients manage anxiety and depression.

A team approach

In pulmonary rehab, we treat not just the lungs, but the whole person whose disease has affected all aspects of life. Our team of specialists will work with you to prescribe rehab therapy to suit your individual needs. You will be monitored by the following persons:

  • Physicians
  • Registered nurses
  • Exercise physiologist
  • Exercise specialist
  • Respiratory therapist
  • Dietitians
  • Licensed counselor

Pulmonary rehab includes:

  • Individualized exercise training.
  • Nutritional counseling.

  • Energy-conserving techniques.
  • Breathing strategies.
  • Psychological counseling and/or group support.
  • Tobacco cessation.
  • Strategies to improve activities of daily living.

Class schedule

Physician referral is required. You will be attending exercise class two days a week for 18 weeks (36 sessions). Once you choose a class, those class days and times are reserved for you. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes before your class begins.

Insurance coverage

This is an 18-week program. Medicare, Medicaid, and most commercial insurance carriers provide reimbursement. For those who qualify, Vocational Rehabilitation assistance is available.
